Perennial bush or small tree, can live around 7 years. The first couple of years are the best in terms of production. Peas can be harvested green and used fresh for cooking or they can be harvested dry for longer storage. Brown types are commonly seen in Puerto Rican Arroz con Gandules recipes. Black types are common in Indian and African cuisines. Plants can be used as trellises for certain annual crops like luffa. Full sun planting recommended although they grow well in some shade. Grows well in sandy soils, better yields when mulch is applied.
