We are plant nerds, fruit lovers, tree growers and aspire to impersonate the next generation of farmers and campesinos.

We work at TID Nursery where we propagate most of the plants we offer from scratch – meaning seed, cutting, air layer or grafting. Our focus is growing plants adapted to our immediate surroundings that humans are capable of transforming into nourishment, medicine, tools or support for our ecosystem.

Life would not be the same for us, without a very dear seven year old backyard homegarden that is becoming more and more independent as it grows older. It provides us with fruit, ‘nature TV’ as we call it, therapy and wisdom. Another garden that we are learning from is the Apollo Beach Community Forest Garden, a place where interconnections find each other, an edge.

Some of the members of the Apollo Beach Community Forest Garden have had problems with nematodes. Some beds have been left vacant and some left to rest over the summer time. Our community garden coordinator asked us to summarize the process of preparing a raised bed for planting. This is one of the ways we like to do it. The soil in the raised beds has to be continually grown and improved. As gardeners we ought to shift our attention toward growing soil not plants, as it is the health, diversity, life and vibrance of soil that will support healthy plants.
Planting trees in sandy subtropical Florida can be tricky. Sometimes trees get sunken in the ground or sink over time. Sometimes it's too wet and sometimes too dry. 3 key elements for planting trees in Central Florida: raised mound, compost and mulch.
People often want to know when a grafted fruit tree will produce fruit. Although this also depends on the growing conditions, cold protection and overall care given to the tree, grafted fruit trees (3gal-7gal) can theoretically set fruit within a year from planting. The question however is, if holding one or a few fruit at such a young age is beneficial.
Even though there are many videos that tell you how to grow pineapples from tops we wanted to show you how we grow them and how you can easily start a pineapple patch for yourself. We hope you enjoy!
Aside from determining the right time to harvest a banana bunch and keeping your mat in a three generation system for optimal fruit production there is a very important process to follow every time you harvest bananas from your plants: The pseudostem needs to be cut down to the ground as it will not set fruit again and the center portion, the true stem, needs to be hollowed out to prevent corm weevils to lay eggs at the 'gate' of the corm.
In December 2021 we grafted two varieties of low chill peaches in Costa Rica.
The Community Forest Garden is growing so fast and the trees are looking great, we hope to look back at this video to admire the power of these plants and trees. We will keep adding videos to record the growth and development of the ABCFG.
